Joker's Application
NAME: Joker
CANON: Flame of Recca

CHARACTER INFO: In Flame of Recca there are ninja weapons called Madogu, which give their wielders special powers. The plot basically revolves around a bunch of kids who get involved with these weapons and get caught up on the wrong side of a villainous megalomaniac's quest for immortality. SHOUNEN FIGHTING AND ANTICS ENSUE.
ANYWAY, on the side of the bad guys is this guy called Kurei. He is a time-traveling ninjaling who was adopted by the big bad and basically controlled and abused into being a heartless, evil weapon. He's the main villain for the first half of the manga. Joker, the guy I'm apping, is one of his... subordinates? Well, more accurately, Joker came to work with Kurei and his team of Uruha fighters because he thought it'd be interesting. The manga describes Joker as "free like the flowing clouds." He basically waltzed into Kurei's territory one day and destroyed a ton of minions and fought his strongest subordinate evenly for two days straight just to get his attention--only to tell him that he'd only join the Uruha on two conditions. The first condition is that when he gets bored of the Uruha, he'll leave. The second is that he should be free to be informal with Kurei, whom everyone else fears. He is a guy who values freedom and being allowed to do things his own way.
He is also, as his name suggests, a trickster archetype character, so despite helping out the heroes at his own whim he is tolerated by Kurei through the series for his insightful and unconventional way of guiding him. Joker intros in the first tournament arc as a mysterious weirdo, protecting cute girls and dropping helpful hints to the heroes for beating various opponents. Of course, despite giving the good guys a hand, he is still a wild card and a manipulator, willing to go to cruel lengths for his own interests. He betrays the heroes as the final match nears, maiming one of the supporting charas and cheerfully revealing he'll be one of their final boss opponents--all of this he did so his favorite would fight him seriously in the last battle. But even as he claims to be in things for himself, as the series goes on he shows a clear loyalty to Kurei. And even as he's willing to cut down people for the sake of his own ends, he still has a moral streak and tends to avoid hurting the innocent and helpless.
So yeah, he is a crafty guy! But usually he just acts like a screwball who seems to be messing around. Joker's carefree, flippant, and often downright goofy personality belies his sharp eye not only for a weapon's weakness but also for the truth of a person's character. He has a strong leaning toward good people and those he perceives as having very human feelings, despite whatever terrible actions they may have committed. He also likes people who are a bit clever and crafty, not always relying on strength in a fight.
Also, spoilers: Joker dies in the final arc. He pursues the person he lost to in the first tournament for a rematch (and just because he plain loves battle) and instead kind of dies/is put on the bus after helping to fight and finish off several of the heroes' new opponents, proving he's both a good guy and still a loyal subordinate to Kurei.
CONSIDERATIONS:
--Joker will still be a goofball without memories, since that really is an honest part of who he is and not just a front.
--While it's likely he'll still value personal freedom and doing things his own way, that ppprobably won't be as strong in his amnesia state, and he'll be less likely to feel like wandering off if he gets dissatisfied. If he feels he owes Sleeping Beauty something (like his life) it'll smooth things out later as he gets more memories. He is clearly someone capable of loyalty and a decent amount of obedience when he thinks they deserve it from him.
--While he's v. trickster archetype, and still capable of being a douche when called for, without memories he's probably more likely to lean toward being friendly and helpful to most people and is likely to come off more like a hero type for a while. Maybe?
--He'll be curious and poke Kurei, but it's up in the air if he'll see him as someone he'd still follow after Aather.
SKILLS: Technically, Joker doesn't have any powers. But when wielding his madogu, Taishaku Kaiten, he is able to manipulate gravity, making anything caught in the field of its influence lighter or heavier however he wants. He can use this to crush opponents with their own weight or lighten any blows that land on him to the point where he doesn't feel them (somehow). He can also use it to make a black hole?! Yeah... The weapon is apparently one that's hard to master. He's also shown using it as a normal trident/spear thing and he also uses ninja throwing knives when the occasion calls for it. He has unexplained reconnaissance skills and can cook takoyaki.
SUITED TO BE A KNIGHT? I think so! He's already a midboss mentor type in canon anyway, and tends to get things done even if it's not exactly the way he was ordered to do it. He'll be self-motivated to help people out, and if it'll get the kind of reaction he wants, he probably won't mind maiming people either.
